Bedtime routines… do you have one? 🌙 I let you into a little secret, a bedtime routine doesn’t need to be long or complicated but it does need to be consistent & repeated in the same order each night, this is key! 🔑 By being consistent & repeating the same routine each evening, your little ones will use these simple steps as cues to signal that it’s time to start winding down ready for bed! 😴 So let me introduce you to my 5 B’s for bedtime🐝 1. Sleep Environment First things first get your babies/child’s sleep environment ready, this may include closing curtains/black out blinds, dimming lights and turning on a white noise machine! Remember to check the temperature of the room you don’t want your little one getting cold in the night!! 🛌 2. Bath🛁 What better way to start getting ready for bed, a warm bath! Did you know a bath will help your little ones prepare for sleep, their body temperature will slightly dip when getting out of the bath which signals to the brain that it’s time for sleep!😴 3. Bum💩 A clean nappy, sleep suit/pjs ready for the night ahead & don’t forget to brush those teeth. You may like to include a baby massage for younger babies at this point. 💆🏻 4.Bottle/Books/Communicating & Bonding Time🍼📚 This will vary on your child’s age. For babies the next step in your routine is having a bottle/boob, ensuring after the feed that baby is winded. You may like to sing a lullaby whilst feeding baby or following a feed you may like to read a book/sing a lullaby. For older children this is a perfect time to have some quiet reflecting time, this could be reading a book, singing a song & talking about your child’s day 🥰 5.Lights Out💡 Finally lights out, kiss/cuddle & off to sleep! Ensure you set boundaries here or you could be giving thousands of kisses! Today is world kindness day and this felt very relevant after speaking to a Mum who said to me that she felt selfish for wanting more sleep! 😢 I asked her why she felt selfish? She replied “because I’m a Mum now, this is part of being a parent isn’t it?” 🤔 😴 Is being sleep deprived, at your wits end physically, emotionally and mentally part of being a parent? 😴 Is feeling exhausted to the point that you can’t function part of being a parent? 😴 Is being resentful, snappy, irritable and frustrated part of being a parent? 😴 Is constantly arguing with your partner and putting stress on your relationship part of being a parent? Is wanting to put your health, well being, needs and safety aside selfish when it could affect you being the best parent? 🤔 NO! Wanting more sleep doesn’t make you a bad or selfish parent, it means you want to do the best for child and your family to be the best possible version of yourself! It’s not selfish, everyone needs sleep to function, survive and for your health and mental wellbeing, it’s a need and a priority that every human being in this world needs to be the best version of themselves! If only it was that easy aye! 🙄 What about the mountain of washing that isn’t far off the size of Mount Everest! ⛰️ Oh and then there’s the washing up that’s been sat in the sink for the last 48 hours! 🧽 Should probably do a food shop as well unless we want to live off of rice & beans for the next week! 🍚 And then there’s my job, I’m not sure how I explain to my boss that I deceided to nap instead of working! I don’t know if napping will pay the bills! 💻 I mean it would be nice to take a shower to and wash my hair before I start to look very much like a birds nest!! 🪶 It so easy to say sleep when the baby sleeps but…. Firstly what do you do if your baby doesn’t sleep?😴 Oh and secondly it’s a lot easier than it sounds!! There’s always a tonne of other things to be doing or catching up on! Today I overheard two mums talking about their babies sleep, of course my ears perked up….👂 Mum 1: How’s she been sleeping lately? Mum 2: I’ve pretty much been feeding her to sleep, she’s wakes through the night but I’ve got her back down with a feed! I’m a bit worried though as that not going to work when I go back to work in a few months so I think I try and get her feeding from a bottle and using formula as well. Mum 2: Why do you need to do that? I just carried on feeding to sleep when I went back to work! it did really affect us much, it just meant I didn’t get a full nights sleep so worked shorter hours. Mum 1: The only problem is I’m going to be working night shifts, so breast feeding at night isn’t going to work! Ben is going to really struggle if she wakes! Mum 2: If you drop breastfeeding she end up with no immune system. Try it, honestly it worked for us, you’d be silly to give up breast feeding just because of work. After this comment I noticed how Mum 1’s body language completely changed & she quite quickly finished her coffee, wrapped up the conversation & left! You may be thinking, what’s your point here Megan? My point is what’s working for you may not work for everyone else! Every baby is different, every family is different and every families set up is different! 🍼 If you’re happy feeding your baby to sleep, waking through the night & working shorter hours due to this then that’s great but remember just because that’s working for you and your family that doesn’t mean it will work for everyone else!!! ❌ Remember to be kind to each other, Motherhood isn’t easy to navigate & everyone’s journey is different! You may not agree with some families decisions or ways of life but if it works for them, their baby & life then that’s what matters! Meet Grace 🌸 Since the day she was born Grace has never slept through the night, her parents felt they had exhausted all options with her, they had tried different sleep training techniques but nothing had worked! 😓 They spent hours every night getting Grace to sleep, only for her to wake as soon as they came out of her room, she would wake at least 5 times a night, many nights were spent sleeping on Grace’s floor or in her bed and some were even spent driving around until she fell asleep, every night was different! The clock change is coming… ⏰ I know some of you are thinking perfect that means an extra hour in bed while the other half are you are thinking SH*T that means our 5am early riser is going to be 4am!!!! 🥱😮‍💨 DON’T PANIC! 😱 I’ve got you covered with some simple tips and trick of how to handle the clock change! 🙌 1. Don’t panic & do nothing- for the more older children! Simply do nothing, they will adjust within the next few days! 🌙 2. Split drawback- push your bedtime backwards by half an hour on Saturday night! 🕣 3. Gradual drawback- for the more sensitive child & younger babies. Starting on Wednesday evening, push your bedtime back by 15 mins, do the same with your daytime routine on Thursday and then Thursday evening push bedtime back by another 15 mins, continue this each day and night until Sunday!😴 If your child wakes early then make sure you keep things very calm, dark & dull remember it’s not time to start the day yet! Within a few days they will adjust to the new changes! Make sure on Sunday 27th October you get plenty of fresh air and daylight throughout the day this will really help your little ones! ☀️ And if you need that early night on Saturday to prepare for an early waking then blooming well do it! 😴 What will you do with the clock changes? ⏰ Splitting it up? 🍁 T O R O N T O C A N A D A 🍁 Firstly where the hell has a year gone! 😳 This time last year I flew to Canada as a holiday nanny for a famous actor! 🎥 This was the most insane experience I’ve had within my childcare career & still very much an experience I can’t put into words! I remember being recommended to the family as a holiday nanny thinking how on earth is this happening to me, I’m just Megan this sort of thing doesn’t happen to people like me it was a pinch me moment to say the very least! 🩵 This experience was beyond incredible & I’m so grateful that I was lucky enough to be able to do it! I rememeber arriving in Toronto checking into the @ritzcarlton thinking is this actually real or am I dreaming! 💭 I suddenly hit the jet lag stage, feeling quite overwhelmed, out of comfort zone ¬t being able to sleep I found myself late at night walking to the Toronto sight seeing words, something I would never of done on my own at home! 🏡 These huge towering building around me, the busy hustle & bustle of a huge city around me! I sat looking at the Toronto sign thinking “ Megan this is a once in a life time experience, get your big girl pants on, you might never get this opportunity again!” Over the next week when not working I made the most of being a tourist in this city, completely pushing myself out of my comfort zone & I’m so glad I did! I experience St Lawrence Market in the early hours of the morning, spending hours wandering around taking in everything Toronto had to offer, going up the CN Tower (the view was out of this world), seeing some crazy animals in the Ripley Aquarium, the list goes on! But I came away from this trip learning that to be able to see what I was really capable of I had to push myself out of my comfort zone! There’s so many things you learn from your parents that you take with you everywhere in life! 🌎 Today marks 9 years of life without my Dad! 💔 Together my parents taught me alot of things which I take through life with me, here’s just a few…. • Nothing in life is free, I was taught you have to work hard to get what you want! 💪🏻 • A first impression lasts forever, manners don’t cost a thing!🙋🏻‍♀️ • You can do anything in life if you put your mind to it, there’s no such word as can’t! 💭 • Never go to bed on an argument & always say I love you before falling asleep! ❤️ • Look after the pennies & the pounds will look after themselves! 🤑 • It’s okay if you fail, get back up, dust yourself off & learn from your mistakes! 🧹 • No matter where you are or what you’ve done you will always have a place called home! 🏡 • Actions speak louder than words! 🗣️ • Sticks & stones may break my bones but words can never hurt! 💎 • Don’t step on the cracks or you’ll break your mother’s back! 🤣 • The things you find boring as a child are the things you appreciate as an adult! (this one sticks with me, as a child I remember sitting on a cliff top in Cornwall for hours looking at the view with my Mum, Dad & Brother, I appreciate this more than ever as adult)💙 I’m forever grateful for everything my parents have taught & still teach me, without them I wouldn’t be half the person that I am today! 💜 Daddy you may not be here but you live on within all of us, your quick wit & infectious smile, doesn’t go unseen in all of us! 💤 Wake Windows 💤 What’s a wake window you ask? A wake window is a period of time in which your little one is able to stay awake for before needing to have a sleep! 😴 The theory behind wake windows is to provide a guide to support you getting your little one to sleep at the right time, not to early but not to late, a happy medium as they say! ☺️ However there are some things to remember when it comes to wake windows: • Every child is different, so what may be one child’s wake window may not be the same for another! Some children need more sleep, some need less!😴 • Remember that a wake window is a window of time, a window in which your child is able to stay awake for but is tired enough to go to sleep! It may not be the same everyday and it doesn’t have to be the same everyday! ⏰ • Wake windows allow flexibility around your schedule and your baby!👶🏻 • As your child develops and grows their wake window will lengthen and they will be able to stay awake for longer periods of time!⏳ • As you get further into your day, you’re likely to find that your little one can stay awake for longer periods! There are very mixed views & feelings around sleep training, this family were very apprehensive & reluctant to enquire with another sleep consultant after a previous experience, however after welcoming their new addition they knew that they needed some help to break the vicious cycle they were in!😵‍💫 This family were severely sleep deprived, exhausted, stressed, desperate, feeling very low & like they were unable to enjoy their new bundle of joy due to their sleeping circumstances!😴 Fast forward three weeks & with guidance, help & support from myself this family have literally done a 360 degree turn around!🙌 We’ve said goodbye to sleepless nights & endless amounts of wakings, we’ve found a flexible but consistent daytime routine which allows Joseph to have the well needed rest that he so desperately needed!😴Joseph is now settling himself to sleep & neither parent has slept on his bedroom floor in over two weeks!🎉 When I first spoke to Claire she became very emotional when explain how Joseph would hit out at her at bath & bedtime, this had only started happening after his new sibling was born!😢 Well… I am very pleased to say that, bath & bedtime are now a positive & enjoyable experience for both Joseph and his parents, but most importantly Joseph is no longer hitting out at his Mum 🙌 Often when a new sibling arrives the other child will begin to express their feelings through challenging behavior! This is often a plea for attention & isn’t uncommon at all! 🤮🤒 ITS THAT TIME OF YEAR 🤧🤮 Welcome to the time of year where all the germs & bugs rear their ugly heads! 👋 Over the last few weeks everyone’s been ill!😫 This reel felt very appropriate this week after a stinking cold, sprained rib & then one of my nannying charges coming down with a sickness bug! 🤮 I’ve worked in childcare for over 10 years now and I know for certain my immune system has taken a real beating in that time, especially at the start of this year when I came down with shingles followed by Covid! 🤒 So I’ve spent a lot of this year really focusing on building my immune system up with all the home remedies & vitamins! 💊 As well as this I’ve had a huge change in diet, nutrition & exercise thanks to the help, support & advice from the legend @fitnesswithsophie 💪 The list of vitamins & extra immune support I take is insane, I think I rattle with the amount of tablets I take but….slowly over the months I’ve started to build up my immune system! 🙏 Don’t get me wrong I’ve still come down with common colds & sickness bugs but it’s certainly been a huge improvement to what it was! 👊🏻 Some of the main things that I’ve found have really helped is: 💊 Tumeric & Ginger 💊 Apple Cider Vinegar (it tastes vile but it’s worked) 💊 Kefir (full of live cultures & good for the gut) 💊 A range of different vitamins & mineral from @officialprotocoluk (highly recommend) 💊 Shittake Mushrooms 💊 Manuka honey (with lemon for those sore throats) However as we all know children are wonderful little germ carriers but I still wouldn’t change my job for the world, it’s just part & parcel of doing a job I adore! 🧡 So what’s your go to home remedies, vitamins, minerals or top hacks for fighting off all these illnesses? Case Study No 2 Completed!✅ Introducing Alma! 🌸 When I first spoke to Alma’s Mum she was at her wits end mentally & physically! She described herself to me as a broken woman, who felt like a human dummy, unsure of what to do & living life in survival mode!😴 On our first initial call Mum’s exact words were “she is very strong willed & I don’t think anyone will be able to crack her”😬 Alma was a blank canvas to work with, after speaking with her parents I discovered: - She had little to no routine for her day or night sleep, everyday was different🗓️ - She was waking hourly through the night😴 - She wouldn’t sleep any longer than half an hour in the day🥱 - She was feeding to sleep & Mum was feeling like a human dummy at night, she could be feeding for hours on end🍼 - Alma often wouldn’t display any signs or cues that she was tired😬 - Sleeping between a cot & co sleeping 🛏️ - Parents were spending hours rocking, shh-ing or walking up & down the hall way to get Alma to sleep😵‍💫 The goal for this family was for Alma to sleep through the night & build a more consistent routine for daytime naps! The longer term goal was for Alma to transition to her own room & a bigger cot!🤞🏻 I know what you’re all thinking….did we achieve it? HELL YES WE DID!! 🎉 Alma is now in a consistent routine of three naps a day, she is no longer waking after 1/2 an hour & is able to sleep for at least an hour & a half! I recieved the best video this week! 🥰 I have recently supported a family who were having some challenges with their children’s sleep! 😴 Let me introduce you to George! 💙 George was struggling to stay in bed in the morning until the sun came up on his gro clock, he would often wake and go into his parents room and then wake his little brother! 😫 Of course this was less than ideal for George’s parents and baby brother, so whilst supporting this family with their youngest child I also set George some sleep rules to follow, created him his very own reward chart whilst also getting him on board as my special sleep helper! 💙 Throughout the three weeks of support I gave to this family I sent George several different videos! The first was telling him all about me, Megan the special sleep doctor who needed a very special sleep helper to help me with his baby brother Harry! I’d like to introduce you to Harry💙 I’ve been working with Harry & his family for the past three weeks completing on of my six case studies for my sleep consultancy training!😴 Today was my final day working with this family, I’m thrilled with how far this little boy and his family have come & the results speak for themselves🎉 When initially meeting with parents Lyndsey & Nick they both expressed how important this sleep training was for their family, with Lyndsey’s maternity leave shortly coming to an end and the return of work looming it was clear that their current sleep situation wasn’t going to be sustainable with both parents working alternative shift patterns, night shifts included!🌌 Before starting their bespoke sleep plan Harry was: - Breastfeeding to sleep 🍼 - Waking when transferred from contact napping to a buggy/cot 😵‍💫 - Often not sleeping in his cot 😴 - Frequent & multiple night wakings 🌌 - Early morning rising (sometimes woken by his older brother) 🌇 The goal that this family wanted to achieve was to move away from relying on breastfeeding to sleep & to reduce the multiple night wakings & early mornings! 🤞🏻 So the question is did we reach this goal…. YES WE DID 🙌 With three weeks worth of support, guidance, encouragement, phone calls, messages,& a huge amount of consistency this family have smashed their goal! 👊🏻 Harry is now: - Consistently self settling himself to sleep 🙌 - No longer feeding to sleep & is only having one dream feed of an evening 🍼 - No longer waking throughout the night - No more early rising, he’s waking anywhere between 6:30am-7:30am ⏰ - Happily sleeping in his cot 😴 - No longer being woken by his big brother 🙌 This family are now well rested, happy, and able to return to work knowing that at the end of a shift they are able to go home and get some well deserved rest! A little appreciation post here for my other half! (He will probably kill me for this) 😂 Celebrating three years of us today! 🩵 Without Jon right by my side supporting me, encouraging me and pushing me then Little Merles may not of ever started! Just over here doing my thang!✌🏻 These pictures made me look back at how far I’ve come with my career! 👊 I went to college & studied public services, leaving college I felt I was to young to go into a force, so I took a bit of a gap year… or three & did some random jobs until I got offered a temporary nannying role! I reluctantly accepted it & would you believe this is where it started! 😬 The person that always said I would never work with children absolutely bloody loved it! From there I went to a nursery in Thursley, I then went nannying for a family that I met through the nursery. I worked with them until the children went to school & then carried on my career at a Forest School Nursery. Here I completed my apprentership & became a room leader… right as the pandemic struck!😳 Running a room & a team through a pandemic was certainly an expierance to say the least!😷 I then decided it was time for me to move on from nursery life & continue with my nannying path! I accepted a role with the most incredible family who welcomed me with open arms & the adventures continued! 👶🏻 As most nanny roles go it was time for the children to start school & nursery so it was time for me to depart! At this point I be honest I didn’t know where to go or what to turn to, this family have & still do hold a very special place in my heart & leaving them was incredible hard & emotional! 💕 But after every low theres a high right? The next thing I knew I was flying to Toronto as a holiday nanny for a Famous actor, it’s still a pinch me moment now!🤩 But once again I came home on a massive high to hit a low… what do I do next, where to go & what to do with my career! 😳 Starting my own business is something I’ve always wanted to do but never had the confidence! I realized all these previous roles gave me exactly what I needed to start a business! Seriously jet lagged, on the sofa, tea in hand, I suddenly found myself speaking to Vic from @isle_of_design about a logo & from there the foundations of Little Merles begun! 💜 Basically what I’m saying is, don’t give up on dream because if you put your mind to it you can do anything! 💭 📸 @kayleigh_annephotography

To all the Nannies, Mums, Childminders, Teachers & Childcare Providers, I hear you, I see you & I know the hard work that comes with your jobs & roles! 💜 In the 13 years of working in different sectors of childcare here are some of the things that have been said to me…. “Your job is really easy, all you do is watch tv all day” 📺 “Being a Nanny isn’t a proper job, anyone can do that” 👶🏻 “Mat leave is like a really long holiday” 🏖️ “You basically get paid to do what children do all day, play, sleep & eat” (this was said to me by a ex partner) 👋 “Being a mum is a easy job, they get to watch tv, eat cake and drink coffee when they like” 👶🏻 🗣️ WELL LISTEN UP PEOPLE 🗣️ Being a Nanny isn’t just going to work & playing games and entertaining children, at times it’s a bloody hard job but one of the most rewarding! 💜 There is so much more to working with children than entertaining them and planning activities! 🎨 Being a Mum is a full time job, you don’t earn a salary from it and you most certainly don’t get a really long holiday on Mat leave!! 🤯 So to those who needed to see & read this today just remember you are doing an incredible job, whether that be as a childcare provider or a Mother, don’t let anyone darken your sparkle, your amazing! ✨ To those people that believe all the things above ⬆️ Have a role change, spend a week with me running Little Merles, being a nanny, babysitter, night nanny, event nanny and all the other roles that come with my buisness & swap with a Mother on mat leave or a full time working Mum who is holding down a full time job & her family life and then see if you still believe the above statements! SUMMER IS HERE ☀️ (we hope) 🤞 It’s top tip Tuesday here at Little Merles Childcare Services, here are some of my top tip, tricks and useful information for those summer month! 👍 Some essential information for parent & carers to keep your little ones safe through those hotter months whilst still enjoying the sunny weather & some fun summer activities ! 🍦🛝🌸 Being a July baby I absolutely love the Summer, there’s just something about a sunny day that no matter what kind of day you’ve had it always put you in a good mood! 😊 Some of my favourite things to do in the Summer are: - Early morning & light evening walks with my dog 🐶 - Of course like ever Brit I love a BBQ 🍗 - Trips to the beach 🌊 - Bike rides 🚴‍♀️ - Without a doubt a holiday to Cornwall 🏖️ - A classic Mr Whippy ice cream 🍦 - & of course a cheeky Cornish cider doesn’t go a miss 🥃 But some of my favourite things to do with the many little people I look after are: - Water play, the ideas are endless and so simple to create an activity that can last for hours!! BUT DONT FORGOT TO CHECK THE TEMPERATURE OF THE WATER COMING OUT OF THE HOSE, HOSE PIPES CAN GET HOT IN THE SUN!! 🌊 - Creating different ice cubes for children to explore and break into (some of my favourites are freezing dinosaurs to make ice eggs, flowers, pieces of fruit and of course paint cubes to make some awesome pictures) 🎨 - Its not Summer without a trip to the park or beach with a picnic, I also love collecting shells and pebbles for the children to paint at home 🏖️ - What child can say no to a ice cream!! I’ve been a little quiet recently for several reason but running a full time business on my own, juggling the work load and everything else that comes with running a business…. the admin, marketing, social media content, customer service and all the rest of the things that come with a business, oh and then there’s the actually childcare services that I offer, it has felt a little wild and overwhelming at times!🤯 Oh and then there’s still finding time to have to myself, be present with family & friends, maybe even whizz the hoover round the house or spend a few hours on my sleep training course, I’ve found it hard to try and balance everything equally whilst still trying to please everyone! 🫣 What I’ve realized is…. Has this happened to you? A subject I really want to touch on around the stigma of women becoming Mothers, being a Mother and not wanting or being able to have children! 👶🏻 I want to point out I do not want to cause any distress or upset to anyone with this post & this is not normally something I would do but I want raise awareness & talk about this stigma that is happening in the world! 🌍 I recently recieved this message which as you can image caused many mixed feelings for me!🤯 What makes me any different just because I don’t have a child? Why at 30 should I be expected to have a baby? Is it uncommon to work in childcare ¬t have a baby? The list of questions goes on…. Why is there such a huge stigma around women having children, you shouldn’t be expected to have a child just because you’re a female, let alone because of what age you are? This message highlighted to me that in this world you don’t know what is going on in someone else’s life or their circumstances, let alone that it’s actually none of your business! 🤥 I may not be able to have children, I may not want children, I may be going through ivf or even of had a miscarriage, there’s so many things that could be happening in someone’s world that could be the reason for them having or not having a child! 👶🏻 What also came to my attention was… without having my own child, I cannot provide the nannying service that a Mother would be able to provide! STFU!!! Like what!? 🤯 Just because someone is a Mother that doesn’t make them any a better nanny than someone without children! 🤯 Have you ever been asked when you’re going to have a baby? 👶🏻 Ever wanted to just turn round and tell the person asking to shut up and mind their own business! Do you know how to spot the signs of tiredness in your little ones before they get to the overtired stage? 💤 The signs you see when your baby is getting tired are quite often easily missed, these may include staring into space or beginning to show less interaction! 🥱 You will then see the next signs of tiredness, when you see these signs you really need to get your baby down for a sleep ASAP, they are telling you they are tired, don’t push it and then hit that dreaded overtired stage!! Rubbing eyes/ears, getting fussy/irritated are all signs of tiredness, most think that a yawn is the first sign of tiredness, this in fact is one of the very last signs so don’t be mistaken! 😴 Let’s say you’ve missed all of these sleep cues and you’ve hit the overtired stage, you’ve now got a distressed, overtired & emotional baby on your hands, your baby is now releasing the stress hormone cortisol which can affect sleep 😫 In older children you may see them become hyper-alert or “wired” when they are overtired, in babies they will become rigid or arch their back, release those loud cries, make fists with their hands and generally become very difficult to settle! At this point you may need to use one of the 5S’s to help settle your baby (find these on a previous post on my grid) ⬇️ Have you seen some of these cues in your baby/child? The trick is to spot these sleep cues that your child will show when they are getting tired or tired before they get overtired and all hell breaks loose! 😢 Need some more help or advice? Let’s talk bedtime routines!🛁📚🍼 Your bedtime routine doesn’t have to be a long or complicated process but it does need to be consistent & repeated in the same order each night! This is key!🔑 If you are consistent & repeat the same process each evening you will use these simple steps as cues to signal to your baby or child that it’s time to start winding down for the day & getting ready for bed! Introducing to you my 5 B’s of bedtime🐝 1.Sleep Environment🛏️ First things first get your babies/child’s room prepared for bedtime, blinds/curtains closed ensuring the room is dark enough, lights dimmed/off, turn white noise or music on(if using), ensure the room is at the suggested temperature & complete anything else you may do to create your child’s sleep environment. Now you’re ready to start the bedtime routine! 2.Bath🛁 A bath is a lovely start your bedtime routine, of course we need to wash but did you know that this calm & comforting start to your routine will actually help you prepare for sleep. Your body temperature will slightly dip when getting out of the bath which signals to your body that it’s time for sleep!😴 3.Bum💩 A clean nappy, sleep suit/pjs ready for the night ahead, the next step after getting out of the bath is getting dressed & don’t forget to brush those teeth. You may also like to include a baby massage for your younger babies at this point. 💆🏻 4.Bottle/Books/Communicating & Bonding Time🍼📚 This will vary on your child’s age. For babies the next step in your routine is having a bottle/boob, ensuring after the feed that baby is winded. You may like to sing a lullaby whilst feeding baby or following a feed you may like to read a book/sing a lullaby to your baby. For older children this is a perfect time to have some quiet reflecting time, this could be reading a book, singing a song & talking about your child’s day 🥰 5.Lights Out💡 Finally lights out, kiss/cuddle & off to sleep! Ensure you set boundaries here or you could be giving thousands of kisses! 📚 HAPPY WORLD BOOK DAY 📚 “Keep Reading, It’s One Of The Most Marvellous Adventures Anyone Can Have”~ Lloyd Alexander I love World Book Day, seeing all the children dressed up as different characters, ready to show off to the world! 🌎 The costume ideas are endless & do you know what they don’t need to cost you a fortune! There’s a post I saw many years ago whilst working in a nursery that stuck with me!! “If your child’s World Book Day costume costs more than a book then stop, make something out of boxes, or old T-shirts” And a personal one from me, charity shops are your saviour for dressing up days! 🛍️ Remember it’s not about whose got the best costumes, who spent the most money, don’t feel guilty for making your own costume because…. the one and only thing that matters is the smile on your child’s face when they get to show it off! 😄 That’s priceless ⭐️ This year I’ve gone for an old favourite of mine, aliens love underpants 🩲👽 (you can just imagine some of the looks I got from people 😂) Swipe right to see my costume & two of my favourite books! Is Spring on its way? 🌸🌼 I don’t know about you but I am ready to say goodbye to winter and welcome those fresh spring mornings and warm summer evenings! ☀️ I absolutely love the spring and summer! Being a summer baby, they are certainly my favourite times of the year! 💛 What’s your favourite time of the year? For me working in childcare, the spring and summer brings a whole load of new adventures, activities and ideas to do with little ones! 🚴‍♂️🏊🏻‍♀️🛶🏖️ Heres five of my favourite activities to do in the spring & summer months: 🌸- Pack up a picnic and set off for a day at the park with friends (why not invite the teddy bears as well) 🌼- Beach trips are a must!! There’s nothing better than building sandcastles, dipping those toes in the water, skimming stones and of course the classic sandy sandwiches! 🌸- Why not go on a flower hunt! Find some of your favourite flowers and pop them in a flower press! You can make a beautiful picture with the pressed flowers or even better why not make up some potions and perfumes with them! 💐🧪 🌼- When it’s boiling hot, what better way to cool down than making some ice lollies!🍦 🌸- One of my final favourites is a visit to @rhswisley I love going here in the spring & summer! Seeing all the different flowers coming out in bloom, enjoying a picnic and of course the incredible play & sand area that is available for children to use! Did someone call for a Superhero? 🦹🏻‍♀️ These little superhero’s had the best time fighting off some unicorns that were trying to steal their magical powers! (with their babies in tow of course)💥 This was completely child-led, they picked their own activity & led it without any adult instructions or ideas!💡 It was completely set up by these children, they decided to make superhero masks using their own ideas of how to decorate it & from this used their imaginations to fight off some unicorns who were stealing their magical powers! 💥 & of course they needed their babies to help as well! Child-led learning is a fantastic way to encourage critical thinking, it provides children the opportunities to build their own play by planning their activities, gathering materials/resources & deciding on their own next steps. Child-led learning is personally one of my favourite ways of letting little ones learn & develop. I love watching how children will approach an activity, observing how they develop the activity & how they adapt it to meet their own direction of play! Here are just some of the many benefits: 💥 Develops a child’s emotional development, allowing them to make their own choices, showing them that their ideas are important whilst providing the space for them to work through their different emotions in their own way. 💥 Develops a child’s independence, allowing them to explore their own freedom of play & choose how they want to play. 💥 Develops social skills, allowing children to interact with others & build self-confidence whilst learning how to share, cooperate, problem solve & work together to build on an activity. 💥 Develops imaginative play, a great way to allow a child to use their imagination & creativity whilst expressing themselves as an individual. 💥 Allows a child to think intuitively which supports cognitive & creative development. These three children enjoyed some time at the coffee shop with their babies but unfortunately the croissants were out of stock because an elephant had visited the coffee shop and ate them all…. so they went on an adventure to the jungle to find the elephant & get their croissants back! (Don’t you just love the imaginations of children)☺️ There are so many benefits to be gained from children engaging in role play, here’s just a few: ⭐️ Its an effective way for children to make sense of the world around them whilst acting out & making sense of real life situations. ⭐️ It supports children to develop their communication & language skills. ⭐️ It allows children to explore, investigate & experiment. ⭐️ It supports children with their social skills, allowing children to engage with others, work together to build a scenario, problem solve & compromise with one another. ⭐️ It allows children to empathise with others & see that not everyone sees or experiences the world in the same way. ⭐️ Gives children opportunities to express their ideas and feelings in an environment. ⭐️ Allows each child to develop awareness of themselves and others. ⭐️ Gives every child an opportunity to be creative and use their imagination. Here’s just a few benefits but the list goes on…. When engaging in role play with children I use lots of open-ended questions, these allow children to speak, communicate, problem-solve, control conversations & think creatively. Open-ended questions encourage children to use their language skills because they require an answer. Some examples of open-ended questions are: ⭐️How did you do that? ⭐️How can we find out? ⭐️What does that remind you of? ⭐️Why do you think that happened? ⭐️How does it work? ⭐️What are you thinking about? ⭐️What is that noise? ⭐️What can you see outside? Again the list goes on….. The next time you’re engaging in role play with your little ones try this out! 💖 Megan x
